Gilles Balmet, Rorschach, 2004

He is known for many thing, such as being a painter, draftsman, video artist and photographer, Balmet is constantly experimenting new ways of creating images. Each new series is the result of a protocol of actions where either the support is modified, being folded, soaked in water or the material : the paint being sprayed, blown or smeared. ‘’The manipulations end in accidental results where new territories and some unknown landscapes emerge from. Thanks to this complex and meticulous process, Balmet seems to “free himself from the mastering of a technique without nourishing the illusion of the uncontrolled”. (Artnews.org, Gilles Balmet - Silver Mountains, 2011)
As for the other works (“Rorschach”, “Aura” ou “Tsubas”), Balmet uses a folding technique. When folding the paper, the ink is transferred on the other side of the paper and makes a new and complex web of black lines that get tangled. In the series “Ink Map” the artist goes further and takes the canvas as a support for his research ; the result recalls a city map or any form of organisation of a mysterious space.  (Artnews.org, Gilles Balmet - Silver Mountains, 2011)
